Yusuf’s art, with his extraordinary use of line, form, and colour, guides viewers to different realms, each unfolding a riveting tapestry of experiences. The images within his art are always imbued with a certain sensuousness and grace. To gaze at the works is to connect with them. Embedded with a wealth of intents, they transcend the confines of mere visual stimuli. As viewers bring their unique perspectives, memories, and emotions when they engage with the works, the images, in turn, respond and allow for a rich variety of feelings and interpretations. It is a journey one purposefully enters, only to be swept into a dreamlike state while also having a vivid glimpse into the artist’s vision. Yes, Yusuf is a ‘dreamer’ in all his works, whether they are paintings, prints, drawings, or sculptures. The luminosity of colours in his paintings and the versatility of lines in his drawings speak volumes about the ‘tools’ he has earned and polished throughout his journey, not only evolving as an artist himself but also as a guide to many aspiring newcomers at the graphic studio of Bharat Bhawan for years together; and he still encourages young talents with zealous enthusiasm. The artistic journey of Yusuf has been richly rewarded, with his works celebrated and his regard among young art lovers and practitioners steadily growing. In him lives a tireless ‘urge’ to create, to express—a force, which, like a perennial stream, has flown through his thousands of drawings and paintings. Just this year, while curating a large exhibition of his drawings at Shridharani Gallery, New Delhi, I had a chance once again to see a substantial collection of his drawings, stored with care in his studio.
Yusuf’s line is abstract, untethered. In his paintings, one can observe horizontal
or vertical lines wending their way along, often taking on a free-flowing form. 4,5 At times, they are meticulously ‘ruled’ across the paper or canvas with sheer precision and deliberate intent, creating a fusion of spontaneity and structure, entropy and order, where structured lines intersect with the unrestrained freedom inherent in his creative process. Once eminent artist and art-thinker J. Swaminathan had aptly observed in one of the write-ups on Yusuf long ago: “Among the young artists of India I have come across, there is none better than Yusuf who understands the meaning and the magic of the line. Over the years, he has let it flow through his fingers, at times creating fearful anthropomorphic forms, at times letting it resurrect human forms, sometimes agonized and some times full of joy in free floating space and at times let it alone to play with its own rhythm and create forms which are not cognisable, which may have no referent, but all the same flow out of the hands of man. If the river has meaning in the context of nature, the line has meaning in the context of art.â€Indeed, he never tries to portray an object or figure; he just keeps crossing the canvas as he wishes. However, within this abstract approach, certain forms reminiscent of elements from the natural world and human experiences may subtly appear. While a painting may call to mind the segmented, wiggling body of a creature, others may contain innumerable thread-like structures, pulsating, coalescing into organic and fluid shapes like the tissues of living organisms, bringing to mind the intricate nature of life and the fabric of our own existence. In many of his paintings, a subdued palette with shades of blue, beige, and grey evokes a sense of calm and serenity, which is occasionally punctuated by brilliant red or ochre for contrast, conveying a profound sense of life force. Thus, Nature is present in his art in essence rather than being intentionally depicted. While he may not think in terms of conceptualized or predefined images and themes, his artworks possess a strong and compelling quality in terms of their presence and character. Yusuf’s sculptures, reflecting the colours and lines from his drawings and paintings, stand energetically and voluminously, upholding the creative urgency of the artist. With a tinge of playfulness and a latent sense of humor, these works are highly captivating and are not to be missed. In Yusuf’s work, there appears to be an endless reservoir of gentle and sublime emotions, coupled with deep perceptions about life and the world at large. The transparent and dense colours in Yusuf’s palette, along with the rhythmic, balanced lines that he so blissfully places on the canvas and paper, provide a sublime treat, inviting viewers to enjoy, linger, immerse themselves, and contemplate the profound layers of his art.
